Cake Tips

  • After cooling the cake put it in the freezer. This will make it easier to frost and cut. Also freeze cake in between frosting different colors.
  • To keep your cake plate clean while frosting, place half sheets of wax paper under cake before frosting. After frosting, just pull out the wax paper, one sheet at a time.
  • To keep frosting smooth when frosting a rounded cake, take a strip of paper, hold the each end in either hand and run the edge of the paper along the frosting to smooth.
  • You can make your from scratch if you want, but cake mixes only run about $0.88 and I always have better luck with a cake mix.
  • There are two ways I know of to make your cake come out of the pan easier. One way is to line the pan with a greased sheet of wax paper before pouring in cake batter. This works best with square or rectangular cakes. Another way is to liberally grease pan and then dust it with powdered sugar, before pouring in cake batter.
  • If you want to pipe frosting onto your cake, but do not have a fancy tool, place the frosting into a plastic zipper bag, snip off the corner and it's ready for piping.
